Alma 43-63: Why So Much War?

This great talk was shared by a teacher on our Seminary teachers facebook group.  It’s based on a paper that is at http://si.lds.org/.  She made a handout, but I wanted more of the text of the paper instead of a worksheet, and made my own.

I like the thrust of the text of this talk, which is basically directed at some themes that are found in the war chapters that we can apply in our daily battles with evil.  In other words, it helps to answer the question, “Why is there so much war in the Book of Mormon?”

I used this to help cover some of the war chapters more quickly because we have missed so many days due to snow.

This is one sheet, one sided.  I used the graphics from the website for the charts instead of re-typing because … well, because teaching Seminary is not all I do. It’s a little hard to read but acceptable.

I Have Read the Book of Mormon – reading chart

I made this simple reading chart for a friend on our Seminary teacher’s Facebook group.  It is perfect for reading the Book of Mormon as a family.

Jacob 5 Allegory of the Olive Tree Study Booklet

I made this study booklet for my class’ study of Jacob 5 over this weekend. It has a list of things that I think will make study of this difficult chapter easier for my students.  It includes a list of symbols and their likely meaning.  It includes information on some botanical aspects of olive tree production.  It includes a list of assignments to help students delve more deeply into the topic.  It also includes background information on Zenos and a descripton of each of the four visits of the Lord of the Vineyard.

Print or photocopy this document front to back to help students Jacob 5 more easily.

Book of Mormon Character Study Worksheets

This idea is based on one shared at LDS Seminary Teacher Group by Lindsey M.  Here’s what people say about it:

Here’s an idea for recapping 1 Nephi. I did something similar last year in NT with Paul, and the students said it was one of their favorite activities! – Lindsay M

You know if you did this for each book at the end of the year you could turn it into a Family Feud type … Name the top 3 words used to describe Nephi; survey says…. save the students answers – tally the results – fun times – Amy G

Ps–we have a section in their journals called “power scriptures” where they record scriptures that give them strength. The idea is that by the end of the year they will have a long list of scriptures they can read one by one when they have a bad day on their mission, at school, etc. The handout above asks them to find a “power scripture” from Nephi.  – Lindsey M

I created worksheets for several other people in the Book of Mormon.  If you need a handout made for an individual who isn’t listed here, post below and I’ll add it.

Book of Mormon Seminary Reading Chart / Pacing Guide

This is the reading chart I use for assigning daily reading to my Seminary students.  I usually put Flex Days with no reading assignment on Thursday so that students don’t have to read after mutual on Wednesday night.

Students come to class having read the assignment for the day, so for example, they read the assignment listed for Monday on Sunday evening.  If students miss a day, I ask them to skip it and stay with the group.  They can go back and make up a missed reading any time.  If we have a snow day, I just skip that lesson (or most of it), but they are expected to read. I tell students that no reading should take longer than 20 minutes, and that they can set a timer — if it goes off and they are still reading: stop.

Using assigned reading has resulted in a 97% and 96% reading average for our class over the past two years.  Last year nine students of sixteen read the entire New Testament.  The spread was 80%-100%.

I also input the calendar at Google Calendar so that students can download and sync it to their iPods or other devices.  You can download it here, and make it your own:

You’ll notice that some of ours are different than Sister Tate’s version.  I’m using these because I think think they fit the pattern of the verses better.  My students have had difficulty connecting these rhymes with the meaning in the scripture mastery verses, and so when we can use actual scripture language (Like Alma 39:9), I do.

Thanks again to those who helped!  I couldn’t have done it alone.
