A Welcome Visitor!

I was setting up the video for last Friday's lesson, when to my surprise, in came a student with our un-enrolled Seminary student! I was delighted! I was so distracted that I forgot to celebrate one of the student's birthdays, in fact, but it was all good.

I started out by describing the setting where Elijah comes in to the picture. Ahab is the king. But is he king of Judah or Israel, and how can they know? The kids guessed for a second, and then someone remembered they could look it up in the Bible Dictionary chronology entry I showed them the day before. Ahab was super evil, the worst king yet (see 1 Kings 16:30-33 and 1 Kings 21: 25-26). Elijah tells Ahab there will be a famine and he goes into hiding. Read more »

Elijah and Elisha

This week started out more exciting than I'd prefer. My son had some friends over on Monday for the holiday for some sledding and games. Long story short, the visit ended with my son falling from a rope in the hayloft and a giant old metal pitchfork falling on top of him. Some ancestor of mine saved his life by bending up the tips of that pitchfork, and so he only ended up with a mild concussion and 4 staples. After suffering from memory loss for about 45 minutes and going into shock, he is now fine, thank heaven. Today he's no longer in pain, though his neck is still a tiny bit stiff. The human body is an amazing thing. We were so blessed. I know Heavenly Father has great plans for my boy. Read more »

1 Kings 12, Saul/David/Solomon

After Tuesday's lesson, I was ready for a break. I tried to find a substitute for my class, but by the time it was 4:00 in the afternoon I knew it just wasn't going to happen.

My lesson topic was "Saul, David, and Solomon: What Went Wrong" based on a CES document by the same title, but when I looked at it again, I didn't like it and many of the points were things I really beat down during our previous lessons. The kids had been assigned to describe to a parent what went wrong with these kings, so I didn't want to disrespect them and cut it out entirely.... Read more »

Terrible Day

I felt terrible after this lesson today. I can honestly say that this is the first time I was glad to see the kids go. It really wasn't a bad lesson, but I just could not get the kids to STOP TALKING. It was so rude and distracting. I actually had to have the worst offenders come up and sit by me like kindergartners. Horrible. I even cried after they left.

Great start to Valentine's Day. :( Read more »

Even though your sins be as red as the filling in this jelly donut....

Yesterday I backtracked and did 2 Samuel 7 and 9. I had accidentally swapped Bathsheba/David/Uriah thing with today's reading when I spoke with the class about the reading, and so I went back to do this section of scripture. It turned out to be a really good lesson. In fact, it seemed to go so well I might do it this way again if I ever teach this material again. Read more »
